Crystal clear mountain air, warm clothing, hot drinks and cosy evenings in front of an open fire – that’s what winter is all about. But no winter would be complete without one more thing: snow. At the ski resort of Obergurgl-Hochgurgl there is plenty of the white stuff from the middle of November until the end of April.
The resort of Obergurgl-Hochgurgl lies at an altitude between 1,800 and 3,080 metres above sea level and therefore offers perfect conditions for a thick covering of snow. During the winter months the average air temperature is just 3.2°C and the resort receives 885mm of precipitation a year, guaranteeing snow in winter … and sometimes even in summer! Obergurgl-Hochgurgl really is a winter wonderland in the heart of the Austrian Alps.
Modern snow-making facilities
And even if Mother Nature takes a break and there is a shortage of natural snow, skiers can still look forward to perfect conditions on the pistes thanks to the resort’s state-of-the-art snowmaking facilities. Almost all of the resort’s 110km of marked slopes can be supplied with artificial snow distributed through countless snow cannons. This also means that the resort’s runs can open early in the season and remain in excellent condition long into spring. Work was carried out on the slopes near the new Kirchenkarbahn cable car this summer to install additional snow cannons.
The future of snow
Since the 2014/2015 season Obergurgl has been running a pilot project looking at an innovative way of making snow using an “artificial cloud” which not only produces plenty of the white stuff but also dramatically reduces the amount of water required to do so. The artificial snow made in this cloud has the same consistency as natural snow and therefore replicates the sensation of skiing through fresh powder.
This year the winter season in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl will run from 16 November 2017 until 22 April 2018 – 158 days of outstanding skiing. The good news for all those who can’t wait to hit the slopes is that in recent years the resort has always managed to open on time. Indeed, in many cases the whole resort has been open in November. Snow conditions permitting there will be a pre-opening in Hochgurgl bone week before the official opening date. And the best thing is that, thanks to the resort’s altitude, conditions remain excellent throughout the winter and well into spring!
